emperor-moth-1889-by-vincent-van-gogh-poster
Emperor Moth (1889) by Vincent van Gogh - Poster

One day in May 1889, in the garden of the asylum, Van Gogh came across a large moth. He described it to Theo as a death's head moth. It is in fact an emperor moth, with the big eye-like spots on its wings that are meant to scare off birds. Painting it from life, he wrote, would have meant killing it, and the creature was far too beautiful for that.

Here it rests on broad arum leaves, painted in many shades of green, from bottle to almost grey. A few red berries add a spark at the top. The picture has the feel of a naturalist's notebook, kept by someone with a painter's hand.

We see it in a bathroom, a hallway, or among a cluster of botanical frames. The poster is offered in several sizes.
