In her hand, a cup. Hygieia, the Greek goddess of health, looks at us without a trace of a smile.

She stood at the bottom of Medicine, one of the three ceiling paintings Klimt made for the University of Vienna. The professors hated them, and Klimt eventually bought the works back. In 1945 they were lost in a fire at Immendorf Castle. Only black and white photographs survived, plus a single color photograph of this detail, which is why Hygieia is the one part we can still see in color.

A powerful image for a study or an office, and a good conversation piece.
