self-portrait-on-a-dotted-blue-background-1887-by-vincent-van-gogh-poster
Self-Portrait on a Dotted Blue Background (1887) by Vincent van Gogh - Poster

Seurat and Signac painted with tiny dots of pure colour that blend in the viewer's eye. In 1887 Van Gogh tried their method on his own face, and this is the result, his closest approach to pointillism.

The background is a field of dark blue with orange flecks, the coat a weave of rust and plum. Even the skin is built from separate touches: pink, orange, green and blue sitting side by side. Yet he couldn't quite keep to dots. The strokes lengthen around the eyes and beard and start to follow the forms, a first hint of the directional brushwork that would become his signature.

The gaze is serious, slightly sideways, and the whole picture has a quiet intensity. It looks wonderful in a dark-walled room or a library. Several poster sizes are available.
