Van Gogh left much of the background bare, a warm brown ground, and simply scattered it with short dashes of blue, like a sudden shower of rain.

The face, by contrast, is fully worked: red beard, sharp blue-green eyes, the forehead lit from the left. His jacket dissolves into a mosaic of strokes in rust, green and blue. Painted in Paris in 1887, it shows him borrowing the separate brushstrokes of the Neo-Impressionists and bending them to his own, much rougher temperament.

It has a sketchbook freshness that looks very current today. We'd hang it in a home office, an entrance, or a creative space where an artist's stare keeps you honest. Choose from several poster sizes.
