still-life-with-gourds-1916-by-henri-matisse-poster
Still Life with Gourds (1916) by Henri Matisse - Poster

Black is everywhere in this painting, and it does not feel gloomy at all. In 1916 Matisse was experimenting with black as a color in its own right, something that could carry light instead of swallowing it. This still life is one of the results.

Look at what he has gathered: a plate of yellow gourds, a basket, a bouquet of white and green flowers with a single red bloom, an ornate lantern-like object and, on the right, the profile of a plaster head with its hair pinned up. A window at the top lets in a slice of green, while a yellow frame and a pink rug add the warm notes.

The composition is close to Cubism, but softer. We would hang it in a dining room or a kitchen that likes a bit of drama. It comes in several sizes, and a frame is optional.
