Five people sit around a table under a single oil lamp, sharing a dish of potatoes and pouring black coffee. Van Gogh spent the whole winter before it painting the heads and hands of the village's peasants, dozens of studies, to get this one picture right.

He wanted to show that these people had "tilled the earth themselves with these hands they are putting in the dish," and that their meal was honestly earned. So the palette is earthy on purpose: greens and browns, the color, he said, of a really dusty potato, unpeeled. His friend Anthon van Rappard found it clumsy. Vincent thought it was the best thing he had done, and it now hangs at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.

We print it as a poster in several sizes. The warm lamplight suits a dining room or a kitchen wall.
