Christmas Wall Decor Gift Ideas: How to Choose, Frame and Wrap Wall Art

A wall decor gift does not end up in a drawer: it ends up on a wall, where it is seen every day. We design and print posters every day, and the ones people keep are rarely the most obvious. This guide covers who to give what, which size and frame to pick, how to wrap a framed poster, and a few simple ways to decorate your own walls for Christmas. To see the designs as you read, open our Christmas posters in another tab.

Why wall art makes a good Christmas gift

  • It fits every budget. From a small unframed print to a large poster in an oak frame, the same idea scales up or down.
  • It feels personal. Pick a theme the person loves, a place, a color, a memory, and the gift shows you thought about them.
  • It travels well. A poster ships rolled or framed, with no size to guess, no batteries and no plug.
  • It lasts. A good print stays on the wall long after the tree comes down.

Christmas gift ideas by recipient

For a family with young children

Storybook scenes full of small details work best: elves decorating their enchanted forest house or a Christmas village under the snow. Children look at them again and again, and as winter scenes they can stay up until February. For ideas beyond the holidays, see our kids and nursery posters and our nursery and kids' room wall art guide.

For the holiday host

Someone who loves a full table will enjoy the Joy Christmas table print in the dining room, or a cozy Christmas living room by the fireplace above the sideboard. Both bring the season in without another box of ornaments.

For a modern, minimal home

Choose a graphic piece rather than a story: a modern design Christmas tree, geometric trees or an abstract composition in red and green. A single strong design in a black metal frame suits clean interiors.

For a nature lover

A quiet winter landscape such as the Christmas tree in the forest is seasonal without being loud, and it can stay on the wall all winter.

When you are not sure of their taste

Let them choose: a Posterscape gift card avoids the guesswork. Slip it into a card with a small printout of a design you think they would like.

Which size to give

Size is the most common mistake with a wall art gift. A few simple rules:

  • Above a sofa or a bed: one large poster, 50 x 70 cm or 70 x 100 cm, about two thirds of the furniture's width. Our living room wall art guide explains the proportions in detail.
  • Hallway or entryway: a vertical 50 x 70 cm poster fits most narrow walls.
  • Kids' rooms and kitchens: 30 x 40 cm or 40 x 50 cm, easy to place and to move.
  • If you do not know the wall: choose a mid size such as 40 x 50 cm or 50 x 70 cm, which fits almost anywhere.

Framed or unframed?

A frame turns a poster into a finished gift. Ours come in black metal, white oak and natural oak: black looks crisp and graphic, white oak soft and Scandinavian, natural oak warm and easy to match with Christmas decorations. Framed posters arrive assembled and ready to hang, and you only pay for the frame, the framing itself is free. Framing takes a few extra business days, so order a little earlier. An unframed poster ships faster and leaves the recipient free to choose a frame, which makes sense if they have strong opinions about their interior.

Christmas wall decorating ideas for your own home

Wall decor is not only something to give. A few changes are enough to dress your own walls for the season, without tinsel or new nails everywhere:

  • Swap one poster. Replace the poster above the sofa or the fireplace with a Christmas design for December, then put the original back in January.
  • Lean, don't hang. A framed poster leaning on a mantel or a shelf, next to candles and a few pine branches, looks relaxed and needs no new hole in the wall.
  • Start at the entrance. The hallway is the first thing guests see: one festive poster there sets the tone for the whole home.
  • Choose softer Christmas colors. Deep red with pine green, rust with sage, cream rather than bright white. Our red posters and green posters work all year and turn festive next to a tree.

How to wrap a framed poster

  1. Protect the corners with cardboard corner pieces, or fold your own from scrap card.
  2. Cover the glazing with a sheet of kraft paper to avoid scratches.
  3. Wrap tight and neat, with double-sided tape for invisible seams, and tie the ribbon at the front.
  4. Add a note saying why you chose that design. One line is enough.

For an unframed poster, roll it loosely, slide it into a tube and cap both ends. Never fold it.

When to order

December is busy for carriers. Unframed posters ship fastest; framed posters need a few extra business days for framing. The delivery time for your country is shown on each product page and in the FAQ of our Christmas posters collection: to be safe, order framed posters in early December.

Quick checklist before you order

  • The recipient's taste, at least roughly: colors, style, the room it will go in.
  • A size that fits the wall, or a mid size if you are unsure.
  • Framed and ready to hang, or unframed to frame later.
  • A wrapping plan and a short note.
