Two boots, one of them flipped over so we can see the hobnails on its sole. Laces trail loose on a blue-grey floor. That's the whole subject, and Van Gogh made it feel like a portrait.
He came back to old footwear several times in Paris, buying second-hand boots and, by some accounts, walking them through the mud before painting them. Here the leather is cracked and creased, warmed with rust and ochre, and the signature in the corner reads Vincent 87. These boots have walked a long way, and you can tell.
It's a quiet piece with a lot of character, and it sits well in an entrance hall or a study. We print it as a poster in several sizes. For more of his everyday objects, have a look at our Van Gogh still life posters. His Paris years, when he first lightened his palette, are covered in our feature on Van Gogh's life in France.
