The railway bridge is only a dark band across the Thames, its piers barely visible in a purple haze. A train crosses from the left, leaving a white trail of smoke, and the sun, hidden somewhere above, scatters gold flakes across the water. Two small boats drift in the foreground.
Monet painted Charing Cross Bridge from his room at the Savoy Hotel during his stays in London between 1899 and 1901, then finished the canvases in his studio at Giverny, sometimes years later, which is why this one is dated 1903. He loved London only in winter, for its fog.
Moody and rich, this view suits a study, a living room with dark walls or a bedroom. It is one of several London scenes in our Claude Monet collection, and our article explains how the fog became his subject. Several sizes, framed or not.
