How does that block stay up? That is usually the first question people ask in front of this one.
A huge rectangular volume sticks out over a terrace, its underside lost in deep shadow. Below it, a thin railing runs across the frame, and a tree pokes in from the right as if to check the scale. The sky is almost white, so the building looks cut out with scissors.
There is very little in this image, and that is the point. Two or three gray tones, a few straight lines, one heavy shape that seems to hover. It has the calm of a minimalist painting, with a dose of engineering bravado on top.
We see it in a bright living room, a studio, or a workspace with light wood furniture. The vertical format leaves room for a lot of breathing space around it. It comes in several sizes.
You will find its cousins in our brutalism posters, and if you are wondering why architects loved these daring overhangs, our deep dive into brutalist architecture has the answer.
