Concrete outlives its plans. This abandoned arcade proves it.
A long series of angular arches recedes into the distance, each one a little smaller than the last, until the tunnel disappears in a bright point. The walls are covered in graffiti, tags layered over tags, and the floor is a mess of rubble and dead leaves. Nature and street artists have both moved in.
It is the grittiest image of our brutalist architecture collection, and also one of the most hypnotic. The repeated frames create an almost perfect perspective, the kind photographers wait years to find. The contrast between the strict geometry and the wild scribbles on the walls is what makes it work.
We imagine it in a loft, a teenager's bedroom, a studio or a creative workspace. Anywhere a little attitude is welcome. The poster comes in several sizes.
Ruins like this are part of brutalism's complicated legacy, between neglect and rediscovery. Read how concrete became the bad guy, and then made a comeback.
