Among the many apartment blocks in our brutalist architecture collection, this one has the strangest legs.
The upper floors push forward over thick, angled supports that look like the feet of a giant animal. Above them, ribbed concrete panels, rows of windows and a few patched up frames tell decades of daily life. The underside of the building sinks into deep black, which makes the whole mass feel even heavier.
We like photos that show how a building actually touches the ground. Here, it barely does. The structure seems to crouch, ready to stand up and walk away.
It has a raw, slightly melancholic energy that suits industrial interiors, lofts and offices. With a light wall and a black frame, the contrast gets even stronger. The poster is printed in several sizes.
Lifting buildings off the ground on pillars, or pilotis, was one of the big ideas of modern architecture. Discover how Le Corbusier's ideas led to brutalism.
