Van Gogh painted around fifteen olive groves during his year at Saint-Rémy. He once wrote that the rustle of an olive grove had something very secret and immensely old about it, almost too beautiful to dare paint. Of course, he tried anyway.
In this version the light is soft and even. The sky is made of countless little dabs of white, cream and blue, like a speckled eggshell. Below, a row of twisted trunks rises from ochre ground marked with blue shadows, each one hunched and knotted in its own way. The foliage is a dense blue-green, built from tight, curling strokes.
It's a measured, steady painting, good for a study or a bedroom. Choose the poster size that suits your wall. Our Van Gogh olive tree posters show how differently he painted the same subject, and our article on the Saint-Rémy period tells you why these trees mattered so much to him.
