Here the real subject is light. Sun filters through the olive trees and lands on the ground in pale yellow patches, while the shadows curl around them in loops of blue and lilac. The whole orchard floor seems to ripple.
The trees are packed together, their silvery-green leaves painted in quick commas. A path, or perhaps just a clearing, sweeps from the bottom left toward the back. On the edge of the picture, a few red poppies add a small warm note to the cool palette. Van Gogh painted it in 1889, during the months when he returned again and again to the olive groves around the asylum.
