Pollard willows are the trees of the Dutch countryside: trunks cut short every few years, so they sprout a crown of thin branches like a broom. Van Gogh drew and painted them obsessively while living with his parents in Nuenen, in 1884.
Here a row of them stands along a path in late autumn or winter. They are bare, knotty, a bit comical in their shapes. The sky is a pale grey-white with a weak sun shining through. Browns, greys and dull greens dominate. This is the Van Gogh before colour, still searching, but already sensitive to the character of trees, which he treated almost like people.
Muted and graphic, it suits contemporary interiors with neutral walls surprisingly well, and it makes a good counterpoint to his later work in a gallery wall. Choose from several poster sizes. Our Van Gogh poster collection covers every period. And to see how everything brightened once he left Holland, read our article on Van Gogh's French years.
