Two copper beeches stand like flames in a meadow. Matisse painted them in 1901, years before anyone called him a Fauve, and you can already see the temptation: the trees are not really purple, they are a deep, burning red, laid down in thick, fast strokes.
Around them, the grass is a cool green scattered with yellow flowers, and a pale sky slips through the gap in the middle. A dark pine on the left adds weight. It is a small landscape, but it has a lot of energy.
Why we like it:
- the reds work beautifully with wood furniture and warm textiles
- it feels seasonal without being a cliché autumn picture
- it shows a side of Matisse many people have never seen
