If you had to pick one Van Gogh self-portrait for its colour, this could be it. The straw hat is a bright, buttery yellow, the background a speckled orange and pink, and the jacket a soft lilac. Even his beard and skin catch the warmth, glowing gold and orange.
He painted it in Paris in the summer of 1887. By then he had absorbed everything the Impressionists and Neo-Impressionists could teach him and was starting to go his own way. The strokes are short and lively, following the curve of the brim and the folds of the jacket. Against all that warmth, the blue-green of his eyes is the only cool note, and it pulls you straight in.
A joyful, sunny portrait for a living room, a kitchen or an entrance. Available as a poster in several sizes. Compare it with his other straw hats in our collection of Van Gogh paintings. And see where this colour took him in our feature on Arles and beyond.
