Stand at the bottom of a spiral staircase, tilt your head all the way back, and the steps turn into a shell.
That is exactly what happens here. The underside of the stairs fans out in pale, smooth segments, each one a little brighter than the last, before curling into a dark eye at the center. Around it, the frame is almost pure black. There is no railing in sight, no person, no clue about the building. Just one bright curve.
Of all the pieces in our brutalist poster collection, this one is probably the most graphic. From across a room, it could pass for a nautilus or a minimalist print. Up close, you start to notice the joints between the concrete slabs and the soft gradient of light.
- Strong contrast that works on white, gray or dark walls
- A landscape format that suits a sofa or a bed
- Several sizes, framed or not
Concrete stairs like this one were a signature of the movement. Discover where brutalism started and why it is back.
