Arles, February 1888. Winter wasn't over. Snow lay on the fields and the orchards were still bare. So he did what any impatient gardener might: he snapped off an almond twig and put it in a glass of water to bloom indoors.
The result is one of his most delicate paintings. The glass sits on a yellow-green table, the twig rising out of it with a few pink and white blossoms. Behind it, the wall is pale blue, cut horizontally by a single red stripe. He signed it at the top left, in red, almost like a touch of calligraphy. The influence of Japanese prints is everywhere: the simplicity, the empty space, the attention to one small thing.
Small subject, big charm. It's lovely in a kitchen, an entrance or on a bedside wall. Several poster sizes are available. Follow the almond story, from this twig to the famous branches, in our Van Gogh almond blossom posters, and read about his first weeks in Arles on our blog.
