Winter has covered everything in white. Everything except this.
A cluster of tall concrete blades bursts out of the snow, pointing in every direction like a frozen explosion or a giant star. Behind it, a line of bare trees fades into the fog. There is no building, no road, no person. Just the monument and the silence around it.
Structures like this are known as spomeniks, memorials built in the former Yugoslavia, often in remote landscapes. They are among the most striking and mysterious works of twentieth century concrete, somewhere between sculpture, architecture and science fiction.
The very light background makes it a great piece for a bright room. A white wall, a light wood frame, and it becomes almost a drawing. The poster comes in several sizes.
Spomeniks are a rare and fascinating chapter of our brutalist poster collection. To place them in the broader story of raw concrete, read our article on brutalism around the world, from Britain to the Balkans.
