A band of fiery orange burns along a dark horizon, under a sky full of heavy clouds edged with gold and gray. The land is reduced to a black strip, and a few streaks of yellow light flicker through the clouds like lightning.
This small, intense study dates from around 1868, when Monet was still in his twenties and often short of money. It has none of the softness of his later sunsets: it is painted fast, with thick dabs, as if he wanted to catch the colors before they went out. Because the canvas is long and narrow, we print it with a wide light border that keeps the whole sky.
A striking accent for a living room, an office or a dark wall. Find the later sunsets of Pourville and Lavacourt among our Monet prints and posters, and read our story of his early years.
