In June 1890 Van Gogh set up behind the church of Auvers-sur-Oise, a Gothic building that still stands today, and painted it from the back, the chevet. It's one of the best known works of his final weeks.
The church seems to bend and sway. Its stone walls are painted in violet and blue, its windows dark, its roof orange. Behind it, the sky is a deep, almost night-like cobalt, even though it's daytime. In front, a sandy path forks around a patch of grass, and a peasant woman in a white bonnet walks away from us. Van Gogh wrote to his sister that the building looked violet against a sky of simple deep blue, pure cobalt.
Powerful and slightly unsettling, it works in a living room or an entrance. Order it as a poster in several sizes. See more Van Gogh works from Auvers in our collection, and read the last chapter of Van Gogh's story in France on our blog.
