Fewer shapes, bigger shapes. This Lagoon from Jazz keeps only five of them: two deep blue forms that curl like waves, a black one stretching across the top, a small green one in the middle and a large coral branch reaching toward the corner.
Matisse cut them from paper he had painted with gouache, and you can still see the brush texture in the coral. The shapes do not touch. They float on a pale grey ground with plenty of breathing room between them, which gives the plate a calm, almost underwater slowness.
We think this is the easiest of the three Lagoons to place. The blue and black are classic, the coral adds a little warmth, and the generous empty space keeps it from feeling busy. It is available in several sizes, framed or unframed, in a living room as well as a bathroom.
Pair it with its two siblings from our Matisse prints, and if you are wondering why he ended up making art with scissors, our Matisse story explains it all.
