In Nuenen, the village where his father was pastor, an old church tower stood in the middle of the fields, surrounded by the simple wooden crosses of the peasants' graveyard. In 1885 it was about to be demolished, and Van Gogh painted it one last time.
The tower is heavy and square, its walls in browns and ochres, its spire already gone. Birds circle above it in a greyish sky, and a few crosses lean in the grass at its feet. Van Gogh wrote that he wanted to show how simply the peasants are laid to rest in the very earth they worked, and how faith and religion crumble while peasant life goes on.
It's a moody, earthy painting that suits a library, a study, or an interior with dark woods and leather. It's available as a poster in several sizes. See how far he travelled afterwards through our Van Gogh art print collection, and read our article on his years in France, where his palette exploded.
