Van Gogh painted it at Saint-Rémy in February 1890, after an engraving by Gustave Doré from a book about London. He was, after all, living in an institution himself. Many see his own red-haired face in the central prisoner, the one who looks out at us. The palette is dominated by blue-greens and greys, the walls painted almost brick by brick, which reinforces the feeling of confinement.
