In May 1888, Van Gogh rented four rooms in a house on Place Lamartine, in Arles. It was painted yellow, had green shutters, and he loved it at once. In September he painted it, with the street around it, under a deep blue sky.
His house is the one on the right, with the green door and shutters. Around it, a shop with a pink awning, neighbouring houses, a few passers-by, and a train crossing a bridge in the background. He described to Theo houses the colour of sulphur under a sky of pure cobalt, adding that it was a hard subject, which was exactly why he wanted to conquer it.
This is where he hoped to found a studio of the south, and where he welcomed Gauguin a month later. A meaningful painting for any Van Gogh fan, at home in an entrance or a living room. Available as a poster in several sizes. Explore the Van Gogh poster collection, then read the whole adventure in our article on sunflowers, stars and the Yellow House.
