Count the balconies if you like. We gave up somewhere around forty.
This photo fills the whole frame with the face of a residential tower. Columns of balconies run from top to bottom, slightly out of step with each other, and the concrete between them carries decades of rain stains. Some windows have curtains, some have plants, one seems to have a satellite dish. It is architecture with people inside, and you can feel it.
Housing blocks like this one were built fast and in huge numbers after the war. Many were criticized, some were torn down, and plenty are now loved again by residents and photographers alike. We find their repetition oddly soothing, a bit like a page of handwriting seen from far away.
In a home office or a reading corner, it adds structure without shouting. The poster is printed in several sizes. For more facades with the same honest concrete, have a look at our brutalism wall art. And to understand how these towers shaped postwar cities, read our article on the rise and fall of brutalist housing.
