A single white seaweed spreads its loops across a red ground, while a strip of green runs behind it like deep water seen through a gap. Matisse cut this shape freehand in 1947, at a time when scissors had more or less replaced his brushes. Look closely and you will spot four small white squares drifting between the fronds. They stop the whole thing from feeling too still.
We like how little is going on here. Three colors, one shape, and yet the eye never settles. On a pale wall the red reads warm and graphic, and in a bathroom or a hallway it adds the kind of punch that plain walls rarely get. It also sits comfortably next to the other cut-outs in our Henri Matisse poster collection.
The poster is available in several sizes, with or without a frame. Curious how a painter in his seventies ended up working with paper and pins? The story of Matisse's scissors years is a good read before you pick your format.
