Clusters of wisteria hang from the top of the picture in violet, blue and yellow-green, against a deep turquoise background. Lower down, a few vague masses of green and ochre float like reflections, and the whole canvas feels like looking up and down at the same time.
Monet grew wisteria over the Japanese bridge in his water garden. In his last years, he painted it on large canvases and planned to use it as a frieze above his water lily panels. The project was abandoned, but these late wisteria paintings remain among his most abstract works.
