A windy summer afternoon, seen from below. Camille Monet stands at the top of a grassy slope, her white dress pushed sideways by the breeze, a green parasol tilted against a sky full of moving clouds. A little lower down, half hidden by the grass and the yellow wildflowers, their son Jean looks straight at us from under a round straw hat.
Monet painted the scene in 1875 near their home in Argenteuil, quickly and in the open air. Nothing stands still: the veil blowing across Camille's face, the shadows on her skirt turning blue and violet, the long strokes of the grass. It is less a formal portrait than a moment caught on the fly, and the original now hangs at the National Gallery of Art in Washington.
