Best Custom Poster Websites: 10 Places to Turn Your Photo into a Poster

Custom photo poster with white borders: three children hugging above a mountain lake, with the title Unforgettable Moments and the subtitle Memories for life

A photo that lives on your phone gets seen for a few seconds. The same photo printed large and hung in the hallway gets seen every day. That is the whole appeal of a custom poster: your wedding, your dog, a road trip or a first portrait of the baby, printed big enough to become part of the room.

The hard part is choosing where to order it. Drugstore photo counters, photo book companies, professional labs and design platforms all offer custom photo posters, but they are not built for the same thing. Some are cheap and fast but leave you with a thin print and no frame. Others print beautifully but give you few tools to add a title or a date. A few let you design almost anything, at prices that are hard to read.

We compared ten of the main custom poster websites available in the US, looking at how easy it is to design the poster, what you can add to the photo, the paper, the frames, the delivery options and the real prices, checked on each website in October 2026.

In short: Posterscape is our top pick if you want a custom poster that looks like wall art rather than a blown-up snapshot, with a live preview, titles and layouts, and a frame that arrives ready to hang. Walgreens and CVS are the practical choice when you need a poster today, Walmart is the cheapest for large sizes, Printique is the lab to pick for paper quality, and Shutterfly and Mpix are best when you want a collage with many photos.

Custom poster websites compared: the short version

What we looked at when comparing photo poster services

With a custom poster, you bring the image. What you are really paying for is everything that happens next: how well the website helps you frame it, add a few words, choose the paper and get it on the wall. So rather than catalog size or artistic selection, we focused on the following:

  • The editor: can you see a faithful preview, reframe the photo, and spot a resolution problem before ordering?
  • Personalization: can you add a title, a date or names, and do the layouts look designed rather than improvised?
  • Paper: is the paper clearly described, and is there a choice of finish?
  • Sizes: does the range cover small frames, the classic 18 × 24 inches and a real statement size?
  • Framing: can you order the poster framed, and does it arrive ready to hang?
  • Speed and delivery: store pickup, shipping times, and the option to send it straight to someone as a gift.
  • Price transparency: can you see what you will pay before spending ten minutes designing?

For prices, we checked each US website and noted the regular price of an unframed poster in about 12 × 16, 18 × 24 and 24 × 36 inches, or the nearest size on offer. We did not order test prints from every company, so this guide reflects what each one offers and shows publicly.

10 places to turn your photo into a poster

Each website below does something well. The right one depends on whether you care most about speed, price, collages, paper or the finished look on the wall.

The Posterscape custom poster editor, with a family photo previewed as a poster and options for format, layout and size

1. Posterscape: our top pick for a custom poster that looks like wall art

Most photo websites print your picture as it is. At Posterscape, we built our custom poster tool the way we design the rest of our posters: the photo is the starting point, and the layout, typography and frame are what make it feel like a piece you would choose for your living room.

You upload a photo (JPG, PNG, WEBP or the HEIC format of iPhones, up to 40 MB), then choose portrait, landscape or square and one of 19 sizes from 6 × 8 to 28 × 39 inches. You can drag the photo to reframe it, zoom, rotate it, and try ten filters, from Vivid and Golden to Black & white and Sepia. A title and a subtitle can be added in a classic serif or a modern sans-serif font, and three layouts place the text differently: white borders like a gallery print, a full-page photo with white text, or a white text box near the bottom.

Three custom posters showing the three layouts: a wedding photo with white borders, a dog photo with white text on the full page, and a Big Sur photo with a white text box

The three layouts, from left to right: white borders, full page and text box.

Two details make a difference in practice. A quality indicator rates the print from excellent to low resolution for the size and zoom you choose, so you know before ordering whether your photo is sharp enough. And a print color preview shows how very bright colors will look on paper, since some neon or electric shades cannot be printed exactly. Your design is saved in your browser for 30 days if you want to finish it later.

Every poster is printed to order on 200 gsm FSC-certified paper, in matte or semi-gloss. You can order it unframed, in a slim black metal frame, or in a premium white oak or natural oak frame, all with acrylic glazing. Framed posters arrive mounted and ready to hang: you only pay for the frame, the framing itself is free.

In the US, an unframed custom poster costs $16 in 6 × 8 inches, $24 in 12 × 16 inches, $34 in 18 × 24 inches and $52 in 28 × 39 inches. In a black metal frame, a 12 × 16-inch poster costs $59. Unframed posters are delivered in 4 to 5 business days (1 to 2 days more for remote areas), framed posters in about 2 additional business days, and you can enter the recipient's address at checkout to send it as a gift.

Why Posterscape stands out: layouts and typography that look designed, a preview that tells you if your photo is good enough, oak frame options and a poster delivered ready to hang.

Best if you want: a single strong photo turned into a framed poster you would happily hang in the living room, or a gift that does not look homemade.

What to keep in mind: one photo per poster (no collage templates), no 24 × 36-inch size, and no same-day pickup. If you need a poster tonight, a drugstore will be faster.

Shutterfly homepage with photo book promotions and sitewide deals

2. Shutterfly

Shutterfly is one of the best-known names in personalized photo products in the US, and its strength is design templates. Its poster section offers collages for anything from one photo to several dozen, along with text options, so it suits birthday boards, graduation posters and family collages.

Posters are printed on matte paper, and the premium poster line starts at $23.99. Sizes in the poster section go up to 22 × 28 inches; bigger formats exist mainly as framed prints, at a much higher price. Costco members will also land here: since Costco closed its own photo center, costco.com sends members to Shutterfly with a discount.

The catch is pricing. Shutterfly runs sitewide promotions almost constantly (up to 50% off when we checked), so the list price is rarely what anyone pays, and it is worth waiting for a code.

Best if you want: a collage poster with many photos and a ready-made design.

What to keep in mind: never pay full price, and check the size you need is available as a poster rather than a framed print.

Walgreens Photo homepage with same-day wall decor and prints

3. Walgreens Photo

Walgreens is the answer when the party is tomorrow. You design the poster online or in the app and pick it up the same day at a nearby store, with thousands of locations across the country. Templates, text and collage layouts are available.

Posters come in 11 × 14, 12 × 18, 16 × 20, 20 × 30 and 24 × 36 inches, with satin photo paper and, for same-day pickup, glossy or matte options. Regular prices are around $10.99 for 11 × 14 inches and $29.99 for 24 × 36 inches. Free ship-to-store and home delivery are also offered, but they take several days.

What you gain in speed, you lose in finish. There is no frame option on the poster page and little information about paper weight, so it is better suited to a birthday banner or a school project than to a print meant to stay on the wall for years.

Best if you want: a custom poster in a few hours, close to home.

What to keep in mind: you will need to find a frame yourself, in a standard size such as 16 × 20 or 24 × 36 inches.

CVS Photo logo

4. CVS Photo

CVS works much like Walgreens: posters designed online and ready for same-day pickup in store, in sizes from 11 × 14 to 24 × 36 inches. It also offers a few unusual finishes, such as metallic paper and repositionable posters that can be moved without damaging the wall.

CVS is known for very aggressive photo deals, sometimes more than half off posters. That is good news if you happen to order during one, but it makes the regular price almost meaningless as a reference. Compare the total at checkout rather than the advertised price.

Best if you want: a last-minute poster, ideally during a promotion.

What to keep in mind: like other drugstore posters, it is a quick print rather than a finished piece of decor.

Walmart Custom Print homepage with personalized photo gifts

5. Walmart Photo

Walmart has the lowest prices we found for large custom posters: about $7.86 for 11 × 14 inches, $14.86 for 16 × 20 inches and $22.86 for 24 × 36 inches. You can choose matte or glossy paper and add text, templates or a collage layout.

Same-day pickup is available only on some matte sizes; larger and glossy posters are shipped, with free shipping over $35. There is no 18 × 24-inch size and no framed poster option, only frames and foam boards sold separately.

Best if you want: the biggest print for the smallest budget, for a dorm room, a party or a temporary display.

What to keep in mind: at this price, do not expect thick paper or a premium finish, and plan for the frame separately.

Printique homepage, the Adorama photo lab, with photo prints, books and albums

6. Printique

Printique, the photo lab owned by Adorama, is the choice of many photographers. It offers poster prints from 10 × 20 up to 40 × 60 inches and a wide range of papers: glossy, luster, satin, matte, metallic, Fuji deep matte and fine art paper. Framing with mats and glass is available too.

Lab quality does not mean high prices for standard papers. Its price list shows a 12 × 18-inch luster print at $8.20, a 16 × 20 at $18 and a 24 × 36 at $48. Fine art papers cost considerably more.

Printique is a print lab, not a design tool. You upload a finished image, and there are few options for adding a title, a date or a layout. If you want text on the poster, prepare the file beforehand.

Best if you want: the best possible print of a photo you have already edited, or a very large format.

What to keep in mind: confirm the final price in the cart, and plan the design yourself.

Mpix homepage with seasonal photo cards and prints

7. Mpix

Mpix, another professional lab, approaches posters through collages. Its poster section is built around templates where you drop in your photos and text, in sizes from 12 × 18 to 36 × 48 inches, starting at $14.99 for 12 × 18 inches. Orders usually ship within 1 to 2 business days, with free standard shipping from $45.

These posters are printed on 30 lb poster paper with a thin white border, and Mpix states that they are not meant for mounting. For a single photo printed on photographic paper, you would order from its photo print range instead.

Best if you want: a neat collage poster for a graduation, a sports season or a family year in pictures.

What to keep in mind: the poster paper is lighter than photo or fine art paper.

Snapfish homepage with photo cards, calendars and prints promotions

8. Snapfish

Snapfish prints its large formats on real silver-halide photo paper, with a matte, fade-resistant finish, in sizes from 11 × 14 to 20 × 30 inches. Collage and adhesive versions are available, and framed large prints start at $91.99.

Like Shutterfly, Snapfish relies heavily on promo codes, and prices often only appear once you start a project. With a good code, it is one of the least expensive ways to get a true photographic print.

Best if you want: a photo-paper print at a low price, if you are patient with promotions.

What to keep in mind: nothing above 20 × 30 inches, and the pricing takes some effort to decode.

Zazzle homepage with customizable holiday cards and party products

9. Zazzle

Zazzle is a design platform as much as a printer. Its editor lets you add text, change fonts, place graphics and start from thousands of templates made by independent creators. If you want a poster with a quote, a map or a very specific design around your photo, it gives you the most freedom.

The sizes are less standard than elsewhere (for example 16.5 × 23.4 or 20 × 25 inches on poster paper), and every price is shown as a "sale" against a higher "comparable value", which makes comparison difficult. A 20 × 25-inch poster was listed at $22.95 before the displayed discount when we checked.

Best if you want: to design something original around your photo, with text and graphics.

What to keep in mind: check that the size fits a standard frame before ordering.

Artifact Uprising homepage with premium photo books and gifts

10. Artifact Uprising

Artifact Uprising is the most design-focused of the photo companies. Its large-format prints use 230 gsm archival matte FSC-certified paper, in 20 sizes from small formats up to 24 × 36 inches, starting at $19. The look is minimal, with a soft, gallery-like finish.

Frames are sold separately, from $59, and prints are not mounted for you. There are almost no options for adding text or layouts: the brand assumes the photo speaks for itself.

Best if you want: a premium, understated print of a beautiful photo.

What to keep in mind: the total climbs quickly once you add a frame, and you will hang it yourself.

Other options worth knowing

  • Etsy: independent sellers offer personalized designs such as pet portraits, star maps or illustrated family posters. Quality and paper depend entirely on the seller, and some listings are digital files you print yourself.
  • Canva Print and Vistaprint: practical if you already design in Canva or need posters for an event or a business. Both print standard sizes, but framing is not their focus.
  • Displate: sells custom metal posters with a magnetic mount. A different object from a paper print, in non-standard sizes, and custom plates cannot be returned.
  • Nations Photo Lab: a respected photo lab often recommended for print quality, closer to Printique than to a design tool.

If you are looking for a poster from a catalog rather than one made from your own photo, our guide to the best poster websites compares the stores that sell art and decorative posters.

How much does a custom poster cost?

A custom poster can cost less than $10 or more than $100 unframed. The difference comes from the paper, the printing method, the size and how much design work the website does for you. Drugstores print fast on light paper, labs charge more for photographic and fine art papers, and design-led companies price in the layout and the finish.

Custom poster prices compared (US websites, October 2026)

Regular prices for an unframed poster, before promotions. When a website does not offer the exact size, the closest size is shown.

Website Small (about 12 × 16 in) Medium (about 18 × 24 in) Large (about 24 × 36 in)
Posterscape $24 $34 $52 (28 × 39 in)
Walmart Photo $7.86 (11 × 14 in) $14.86 (16 × 20 in) $22.86
Walgreens Photo $10.99 (11 × 14 in) $15.99 (16 × 20 in) $29.99
Printique (luster) $8.20 (12 × 18 in) $18 (16 × 20 in) $48
Mpix (collage) $14.99 (12 × 18 in) Price shown in the editor
Shutterfly Premium posters from $23.99, frequent sitewide promotions
Artifact Uprising From $19, depending on size
CVS, Snapfish, Zazzle Varies with current deals and codes

Two things are worth remembering. First, the cheapest prints are usually on light paper with no framing option, so the real cost of a finished poster includes a frame bought elsewhere. Second, a framed poster delivered ready to hang often costs less than an unframed print plus a custom frame from a frame shop. At Posterscape, a 12 × 16-inch custom poster in a black metal frame costs $59.

Which photo makes a good poster?

The photo matters more than the website. A blurry picture will look blurry everywhere, and a large print makes small flaws more visible, not less.

  • Count the pixels: aim for at least 3,000 pixels on the longest side. A photo from a recent smartphone is enough for most sizes up to 20 × 28 inches.
  • Use the original file: screenshots and photos received through messaging apps are heavily compressed. Ask the person who took the picture to send the original, or download it from your cloud photo library.
  • Choose a sharp, well-lit photo: faces and eyes should be crisp at full size. Zoom in on your screen before ordering.
  • Leave room for the crop: a phone photo is usually 3:4, while many posters are 2:3 or 4:5. Keep some space around the subject so nothing important is cut off.
  • Watch very bright colors: neon pinks, electric blues and bright greens cannot always be reproduced on paper. A print color preview, when the website offers one, shows you the difference in advance.

For reference, a print looks sharp at normal viewing distance from about 150 to 200 pixels per inch. That means roughly 1,800 × 2,400 pixels for 12 × 16 inches and 3,000 × 4,200 pixels for 20 × 28 inches. Good editors warn you when your photo falls short.

What to write on a custom poster

A short text turns a photo into a keepsake. The best ones are simple: a name, a place, a date. Long quotes are hard to read from across the room and tend to compete with the image.

  • Wedding or anniversary: the two first names as the title and the date as the subtitle.
  • New baby: the first name, with the date and time of birth, or the weight and length.
  • Pets: the name in large letters and a small line underneath, such as "Best boy since 2019".
  • Travel: the place and the month, for example "Big Sur, May 2025".
  • Family: the family name, or the occasion and year.

As for the layout, white borders suit portraits and black-and-white photos, white text over the full photo works best when the bottom of the image is fairly dark and simple, and a white text box keeps the title readable on a busy background.

Should you order a framed or unframed custom poster?

An unframed poster costs less and makes sense if you already own a frame. In that case, choose a standard size (12 × 16, 16 × 20, 18 × 24 or 24 × 36 inches) so that frames are easy to find.

A framed poster saves a trip to the store and removes the risk of a frame that does not quite fit. It also makes a better gift, since the recipient can hang it the day it arrives. Black frames sharpen black-and-white photos and graphic layouts, natural oak warms up landscapes and family pictures, and white oak keeps a light, soft look in a bedroom or nursery.

A custom poster as a gift

A photo poster is one of the few gifts people see every day. It works for a wedding or anniversary, a birth, a housewarming, Mother's Day or Father's Day, a retirement, or the loss of a pet, when a portrait can mean a lot.

For holidays, order early. Printed-to-order posters take a few business days to produce and ship, and framed ones take longer, so allow at least two weeks before Christmas. Most websites, including Posterscape, let you send the poster straight to the recipient's address. For more ideas on choosing and wrapping wall art, see our guide to wall decor gift ideas for Christmas.

Frequently asked questions about custom posters

What is the best website for custom posters?

Our top pick is Posterscape, for custom photo posters that look like wall art: live preview, titles in three layouts, matte or semi-gloss paper and black metal or oak frames delivered ready to hang. Shutterfly is better for collages, Walgreens and CVS for same-day pickup, Walmart for the lowest price, and Printique for professional print quality.

Where can I get a custom poster printed the same day?

Walgreens and CVS offer same-day pickup for custom posters ordered online, and Walmart offers it on some matte sizes. Same-day posters are usually printed on lighter paper and without a frame, so they are best for events and last-minute needs.

Where is the cheapest place to print a custom poster?

Walmart Photo had the lowest regular prices we found, with a 24 × 36-inch poster for about $23. Printique is also inexpensive for standard lab papers. Remember to add the cost of a frame if the website does not offer one.

How much does a custom poster cost?

Expect roughly $8 to $35 for an unframed custom poster in common sizes, depending on the website and the paper, and more for fine art paper or very large formats. Framed custom posters cost more, often $50 to $150 in common sizes. At Posterscape, prices start at $16 unframed and $59 for a 12 × 16-inch poster in a black metal frame.

Can I add text to a custom poster?

Yes, on most design-oriented websites. Posterscape lets you add a title and a subtitle in two fonts and three layouts. Shutterfly, Mpix, Walgreens and Walmart offer text in their templates, and Zazzle gives you the most freedom. Printique and Artifact Uprising are mainly made for printing the photo as it is.

What resolution do I need for a custom poster?

Aim for at least 3,000 pixels on the longest side, which most recent smartphones easily deliver. For a sharp result, plan about 1,800 × 2,400 pixels for 12 × 16 inches and 3,000 × 4,200 pixels for 20 × 28 inches. Avoid screenshots and photos sent through messaging apps.

What size should a custom poster be?

12 × 16 inches suits a shelf, a desk or a gallery wall, 18 × 24 or 20 × 28 inches is the classic size above a sofa, a bed or a sideboard, and 24 × 36 inches or larger makes a statement on its own. Check that your photo has enough pixels for the size you choose.

Matte or glossy paper for a photo poster?

Matte paper has no reflections and suits portraits, black-and-white photos and bright rooms. Glossy or semi-gloss paper gives richer colors and suits colorful landscapes and travel photos, but reflects more light.

Can I order a custom poster with a frame?

Yes, but not everywhere. Posterscape delivers custom posters framed and ready to hang, in black metal, white oak or natural oak. Shutterfly, Snapfish and Printique offer framed prints at higher prices, while Walgreens, CVS and Walmart sell posters unframed.

Are custom posters returnable?

Personalized products are made to order, so most websites do not accept returns for a change of mind. They will usually reprint or refund a poster that arrives damaged or with a printing defect. Check the policy before ordering.

The bottom line: where should you order your custom poster?

There is no single best custom poster website for every photo and every occasion. Drugstores win on speed, Walmart on price, Printique on paper, Shutterfly and Mpix on collages, and Zazzle on design freedom.

If you want one photo to become a poster you are proud to hang, with a clean layout, a meaningful title and a real frame, that is exactly what we designed our tool for. You can create your custom poster in a few minutes and see the result before you order.
