Almost the whole canvas is water. A dark little island sits in the top right corner, a pale sky barely shows above it, and the rest is the lake itself: thousands of small turquoise and lilac strokes, shimmering like light on a warm afternoon.
The Attersee, in the Salzkammergut, was Klimt's summer refuge from 1900 to 1916. This painting is one of the first he made there, and it already shows the approach he would keep for years: a square canvas, a high horizon, and nature treated almost like a pattern. Some see a link with Japanese prints. We mostly see a lake we would like to swim in.
Calm and airy, it works in a bathroom, a bedroom or a reading corner. It is printed in several sizes, with an optional frame, and joins the other lake views in our Klimt landscape and portrait prints.
The lake, the city and the people are all in our article on Gustav Klimt.
