In 1913 Klimt did something unusual: he spent his summer holiday in Italy instead of Austria. He stayed on Lake Garda, and looking across the water he painted the village of Cassone, its church and its houses piled up the hill.
Everything is flattened. Walls, roofs and windows become little blocks of grey, cream and terracotta, stacked like a puzzle, and the dark cypresses cut through them like exclamation marks. A strip of water at the bottom holds it all together. The square format, which he used for nearly all his landscapes, makes the village look almost like a tapestry.
It is one of the Italian paintings in our Klimt prints & posters, a nice match for an entrance or a living room with a Mediterranean mood. Several sizes are available, with or without a frame.
His travels, and the city he always came back to, are in our story of Klimt's Vienna.
