On the left, Death: a skeleton wrapped in a dark robe covered with crosses, holding a club and grinning. On the right, Life: a mound of bodies tangled together, a baby, a young mother, lovers, an old woman, all asleep in a blanket of colorful circles and flowers. Between them, an empty dark space. Death looks across at them, patient, while they sleep on.
Klimt first painted it with a gold background, and in that state it won first prize at the 1911 International Exhibition in Rome. He then kept working on it until about 1915, replacing the gold with this deep, dark ground.
It is a big subject, yet the painting is full of tenderness. Give it some space in a living room. The poster comes in several sizes, framed or unframed, and joins the major works in our Klimt prints & posters.
The original hangs in Vienna's Leopold Museum. For the city around it, read our walk through Klimt's Vienna.
