Monet, Painter of the Passing Moment

From Normandy to Argenteuil (1858–1878)

Monet grew up in Le Havre, where the landscape painter Eugène Boudin taught him to work outdoors, in front of the sea and the sky. In 1869 he painted La Grenouillère side by side with Renoir, and at the first Impressionist exhibition in 1874 his harbor view Impression, Sunrise gave the whole movement its name. The Argenteuil years are the sunniest of his career: regattas, the railway bridge, Camille and little Jean walking through the poppy fields, and a boat fitted out as a floating studio.

Vétheuil, the Coast and the Series (1878–1898)

After Camille's death at Vétheuil in 1879, he painted the frozen Seine breaking up, then spent long seasons on the Normandy coast, at Pourville and Étretat. In 1883 he settled in Giverny, and from 1890 he painted the same motif again and again at different hours of the day: haystacks, poplars on the Epte, the façade of Rouen Cathedral and the misty mornings on the Seine. Hung side by side, these series are less about the subject than about the light falling on it.

Giverny and London: Water Lilies and Fog (1899–1926)

In his garden at Giverny he dug a pond, planted water lilies and built a Japanese footbridge, and for nearly thirty years it became his main subject, together with the irises, wisteria and weeping willows around it. Between 1899 and 1901 he also spent three stays in London, painting Waterloo Bridge, Charing Cross Bridge and the Houses of Parliament through the fog. His last great Water Lilies, painted while cataracts clouded his eyesight, were installed at the Musée de l'Orangerie in Paris after his death.

Choosing and Hanging Your Monet Posters

The blues and greens of the water garden calm a bedroom or a bathroom, while the cliffs and regattas bring more movement to a living room. His series lend themselves to pairs: two haystacks, two cathedrals or two London views at different hours make a natural duo above a sofa or a sideboard. Natural oak frames suit his gardens and fields, and black metal sharpens the fogs. For other painters of color, see our Van Gogh and Klimt collections, or our nature and landscape posters.

Paper, Frames and Delivery

Every Monet print is reproduced on 200 g/m² FSC-certified matte paper, whose glare-free surface keeps the texture of his brushstrokes easy to read. Choose it unframed or in a black metal, white oak or natural oak frame: you only pay for the frame, the framing itself is free, and the print arrives ready to hang after an extra 2 to 4 business days. Custom sizes are available on request, and every order is printed by our partner nearest to you, in Europe, the UK, the US, Canada, Australia or New Zealand.
